What the treatment involves
Hyaluronic acid filler can be placed with a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula to improve the appearance of a softly defined jawline, add a little projection to the chin, or soften the hollow that can form in front of the jowls. Your practitioner will consider how the lower face relates to the rest of your features before suggesting any treatment.
Filler adds volume. It cannot remove fullness under the chin, reduce the size of any area or tighten loose skin. Your practitioner will explain the product and amount they propose, why, and the alternatives — including other approaches, a surgical opinion where appropriate, or not having treatment.
Who may be suitable
- Adults aged 18 or over who would like to discuss definition or balance in the jawline, chin or lower face.
- People who are in good general health and have realistic expectations about what filler can and cannot achieve.
- Suitability is always confirmed in person after a face-to-face assessment and a review of your medical history.
When it may not be suitable
- Jawline and chin filler is not offered to anyone under 18.
- It may not be appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if there is active infection or inflammation in the area, or with certain medical conditions or medications. If your main concern is loose skin or fullness under the chin, filler may not help and another approach may be more suitable. Your practitioner will discuss this with you.
Potential benefits
- Can add definition and support to the jawline and chin, with the aim of a balanced, natural-looking result.
- Hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary and are gradually broken down by the body.
- Treatment can be planned in stages, allowing you to review the effect before deciding on anything further.
What to expect
Your consultation covers your goals, medical history, a facial assessment and a discussion of options, risks, alternatives and costs. You will have time to consider the information before deciding.
If you go ahead, the area is cleansed and the filler is placed in small amounts. Many fillers contain a local anaesthetic to improve comfort.
You will be given written aftercare information and details of how to contact the clinic.
Recovery and aftercare
- Some swelling, tenderness, redness or bruising is common and usually settles over the following days. The area may feel tender when chewing at first.
- Your practitioner will advise on what to avoid for a period afterwards — for example strenuous exercise, heat, pressing on or massaging the area, and some dental treatment — and on when make-up can be applied.
- Contact the clinic promptly if you notice increasing pain, skin colour changes, or any change in your vision, as these require urgent assessment.
Your practitioner will give you aftercare advice specific to your treatment, which may differ from the general guidance above.
Results and longevity
Some change is visible immediately, but the final result is usually assessed once any swelling has settled.
How long filler lasts varies between products, areas and individuals, and is affected by factors such as metabolism and lifestyle. Your practitioner will explain what to expect for the product proposed — no specific duration can be guaranteed.
Individual results vary.
Risks and side effects
- Common: swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness and small bumps at injection points, usually short-lived.
- Less common: lumps or irregularities, asymmetry, filler moving from where it was placed, prolonged swelling, infection, or an allergic or inflammatory reaction.
- Rare but serious: filler entering or compressing a blood vessel (vascular occlusion) — a major artery runs across the jawline — which can damage the skin and, very rarely, affect vision.
- Your practitioner will discuss the risks that apply to you and the specific area being treated before you consent.
If you experience severe or worsening pain, skin colour changes, changes in your vision or difficulty breathing after any treatment, seek urgent medical help (call 999) and contact the clinic.

Common questions
Will filler give me a more defined jawline?
It may add definition, but how much depends on your anatomy, your skin and the amount of support needed. We will discuss what is realistic for you at your consultation — no particular outcome can be guaranteed.
Can filler tighten loose skin along the jaw?
No. Filler adds volume and support, but it does not tighten skin or remove fullness. If loose skin is your main concern, your practitioner will talk through other approaches, which may include a surgical opinion.
Do I need a consultation first?
Yes. A consultation is needed so we can assess your suitability, discuss options and risks, and give you time to decide. Treatment is never assumed.
This information is general and is not a substitute for a consultation. Suitability for treatment is decided by the practitioner after an individual assessment, and individual results vary.
